Sunday 13th November – Quick Detach (QD)

Bronwen and I drove out to Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre and went for a swim in Enoggera Reservoir. It was a little bit too cold still. There were warm patches which were ok, but as soon as a cold patch floated by, it was too cold.
Electronic Price Tags
After our swim we rushed to Bunnings Keperra to try to buy a pump-up squirt bottle to spray anti-possum mixtures on Bronwen’s possum-eaten tree, but the one we wanted was out of stock, so we rushed on to Woolworths Keperra, arriving just before it shut. The entire store has switched to electronic price tags.

We stopped off at Bronwen’s Parents’ place on the way home, cleaned the (very dirty) air-conditioning filter at Bronwen’s property, and picked up the remaining elkhorn.
Arca-Swiss & Quick Detach (QD)
After many months of contemplation, varying from wondering how hard it is to get a machinist to make parts for me, through to looking into how I can get things most cheaply imported from America when shipping is insanely expensive, I finally decided to go ahead and switch my camera, lenses and tripods over to arca-swiss compatible plates so I could replace my worn-out clip on my Black Rapid strap with a new QD (quick detach) mount.
Weirdly, after spending so much time having trouble finding anything affordable and figuring I’d have to personally arrange to ship things from US sellers, a few weeks ago I unexpectedly found all the parts I (theoretically) needed on AliExpress, so was going to buy them from there. However, the shipping timeframes were problematic—most had a delivery date of 17 January. Even more strangely, just as I was about to buy everything from AliExpress and accept that I wouldn’t actually be getting most of this until the end of the year at the earliest, I found one of the parts on eBay, cheaper. Then, even more strangely—having looked extensively before and not being able to find anything I could get in Australia—I found that not only could I get the tripod clamp and QD swivel mounts for a reasonable price on eBay, but that for a couple of dollars more I could get them from an Australian seller, giving myself a significantly faster shipping time (though still a few weeks—suspiciously long for things supposedly only a day’s postage away in Sydney.) Then, just to hammer home the strangeness, I figured I should re-check everything because this whole “things I’d been searching for for months suddenly appearing on eBay (in Australia no less)'' thing—was weird, so I did a search on Amazon, and found that an Australian seller was selling camera plates I could use, and I’d get them in just a few days. Admittedly, they were a third or so more expensive than the AliExpress stuff—but the AliExpress stuff also had typos stencilled onto it, whereas the Amazon things are actual brand-name parts.
So, I ordered a tripod clamp and two QD swivels from Australian sellers on eBay (supposedly the tripod clamp will arrive 29 Nov to 6 Dec, and the swivels 18 Nov to 25 Nov), then went to bed.
In the morning (tomorrow), Bronwen—who had Amazon gift card credit she needed to use up—ordered me two camera plates with QD sockets, and a QD strap (I don’t actually need the strap per se, it’s just the only way I can quickly get some QD swivel mounts—I intend to put one of them on my existing Black Rapid strap and use that) which should arrive on Thursday!
We’ll have to wait and see if any of this stuff actually arrives, and if so, if it works. You never really know with eBay and Chinese manufacturing.
